I'm quite happy with this GPS. It 'easy to use, accurate, compact, lightweight and has a visible screen. Sometimes it can be seen without the backlight, and requires only a very low backlight when necessary. The basemap poor is expected, and I wanted a detailed topographic already obtained a topographic map Garmin western coastal states.
The GPS will come with the MapSource software and the card with Basecamp. They perform a similar function but are different.Understanding will take time out to solve. Garmin was not much help, "the one you use preferred user. MapSource seems best to organize the tracks and routes, but Basecamp is much better for printing maps.
I like the altimeter, and the ability to measure more precisely my high places (if I could be calibrated recently) and the ability to measure air pressure. The GPS seems to be about 30 meters high and varies considerably (Ilive at about 1325 meters and have seen, the GPS altitude range 1295-1345 meters. With the altimeter is able to recognize when I got the GPS on the ground or when I'm with him. However, you should be able to calibrate altitude often known to have reliable accuracy. If you do not want the altimeter could, the Venture HC to be a good alternative.
Although I very pleased with the Summit HC is when I get a price that I could ($ 120), I think I'll go withThe Vista HCX. Its battery life and additional memory capacity (once you buy a Micro SD card) it would be little price difference, which is currently available.

Specifications
A staple among outdoor enthusiasts, Garmin’s eTrex Summit HC provides peak performance in any environment, making it easy to navigate on the trail or atop the water. The unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, which locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear: whether you’re traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the eTrex Summit HC to help you find your way when you need it the most. At the same time, the Summit HC’s easy-to-use menu lets you create and view waypoints (up to 500), save and view 10 track logs, access setup features, and more. It even offers 24 MB of internal memory and a detailed basemap, so you can load waypoints and routes from the included MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager software and add map detail from Garmin’s entire line of optional MapSource mapping products.
Besides appreciating its small size, boaters and outdoorsmen will also be happy with the Summit HC’s unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Summit HC is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day.
The Summit HC also includes a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even when you’re standing still, along with a barometric altimeter that tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions. The Summit HC’s basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines–in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures.
Other features include an IPX7 waterproof housing, a built-in patch antenna, a TrackBack feature that lets you reverse your track and navigate back to your starting point, a USB interface, a hunt/fish calendar, and a geocaching mode. The Summit HC, which runs for up to 14 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

Garmin eTrex Summit HC Handheld GPS Receiver – John Marcocchio –
I bought this model because I worked for a compass used by firm and I needed an accurate altimeter. I was pleasantly surprised with both the accuracy of the compass and the altimeter.
I am in Jamaica and was concerned when I buy the level of detail of the base map and the satellite would be me high enough resolution. It works great.
Great starter GPSr for Geocaching! – Tom Niderost – Jacksonville, FL USA
I bought this for my sister to start geocaching. Has the most basic needs: sensitive antenna, an electronic compass, and takes a long time on batteries commonly available. The internal memory has enough space for a wide range of topographical maps, but no expandable memory (the only drawback to this wonderful RSPG).
All in all, an incredible bargain! It is not a touch screen for a clone of the iPhone, but the work is done in a simple and reliable.
Garmin Summit HC: Good General purpose pocket GPS – HNA, Soddy Daisy, TN –
This HC is good to make your way through unknown territory. And 'to chase labeling, fishing and navigation points at hand. As with other less expensive GPS devices, the base map is out very poor. I feel that could provide Garmin GPS and other manufacturers in a better basemap. The manual is adequate and the controls are well placed drive. A very serious navigator would probably be happier with a device that has an SD slot to quickly add more detailed maps. The 24 MBHC's internal memory is not the irreducible. I like my HC and perceive it as the best under $ 200 Pocket Navigator out there for hunters, fishermen, hikers and day.
